Gray Hair - I Say NO!

It's our first "This Makes Me Crazy" Monday - and I'm going to let loose (and no doubt offend some) and take on gray hair.  Now, I'm not talking about a woman "of a certain age" who says, "OK, I've had it with all the fuss, it's time to let nature take over and all I'll do is keep it styled and shiny."

No, I'm talking about women in their 50s, sometimes even much younger, who let the gray run wild.  STOP!  Get yourself to a hair salon (or drugstore) immediately!  One of, if not the best, thing that ever was invented to make people look younger, was hair color.  It's the only thing you can do that instantly updates and gives a more youthful appearance.  Yes, instantly.

And I don't want to hear,  "oh but our society is SO obsessed with youth, and I don't want to buy into that."  HOOEY!  Of course our society is obsessed with youth - we all know that.  Is it annoying?  YES!  But that doesn't mean you just throw in the towel and say "I'm not going to play that game," especially when we're talking about something as simple as hair color.

If you want to look older than your years - and matronly - by all means, let your hair go gray.  (And don't toss out Jamie Lee Curtis to  me - I love Jamie Lee - think she's a cool, smart, grounded woman.  BUT, I don't like her hair at all.)

By the way, men totally get this.  Many men are blessed with looks that get even better with age - and gray hair.  Richard Gere immediately comes to mind.  But some don't look good with a head full of gray; and I see them in the salon every time I'm there having my own locks returned to their "natural" state.

The only women I'll give a pass to on this: if you look like Carmen Dell'Orefice (the current model in the Rolex ads who is in her 70s), then by all means let your hair go gray - let that be your signature.  Otherwise, your hair stylist is waiting for your call.

It's Free For All Friday - and I'm feeling it's time for a smack-down! And today's topics: makeovers - cosmetic surgery - and spouses!Every morning I turn on The Today Show. What was one of the first topics this morning? The "makeover" of Susan Boyle, the now famous Scottish lady with the knock-out voice. Well, what was described as a makeover seemed to consist of eyebrow grooming and a new haircut and color job. Not anything drastic - but what a difference!I think back to a post written last year - Gray Hair, ...

Sean, I'm just now able to respond - first I had to pull myself up off the floor after falling from fits of laughter! A valid point - it cannot be denied.

My Mom is in her late 50's and some of her hair becomes gray. I told her that she'll need hair color this time but re refused. I don't know why I think she'll have to wait until all of her hair get gray.

You never know when it comes to your mom!

Things can get a little tricky when mothers and daughters start making suggestions on hair, clothes, etc. to each other. Some pairs take each other's comments graciously, others - well, world war III can break out!

I completely agree, I don't see why people like to look older and tired, gray hair looks so gloomy, I never let my gray roots show, when you have the blessing of hair color, what is the need to look matronly.
