What's Making Me Crazy? Innapropriate Clothing in the Workplace

Over the weekend I discovered the blog, Electric Warrior, and somehow found myself on a post from a couple of years ago.  Well, as I was reading I started laughing out loud (in total agreement) with what the author was writing about: inappropriate attire.

Now she was specifically focused on some of the college girls in NYC, who as she said were either fashion victims - or just trashy looking.  Now, you can more easily get away with bad clothing choices when you're still in school.  But how about when you begin working?

We all have made poor choices over the years with "unfortunate" outfits that just didn't flatter us in any way, shape or form; but, when you're old enough to be in the workplace, you should have enough sense to know what's appropriate and what's not.  I heard one Human Resources manager say that anymore, it's easier to tell people what NOT to wear, than to try to explain what is permissible.

Hm, what about the old advice about dressing for the job you want?  As in, dressing like your bosses' boss?  (Of course, I'm making an assumption that it's not a company where everyone dresses like they're spending the day at the beach.)

Here's the thing though, there are such gorgeous clothes out there for this fall.  There's no excuse to look like a bum - or a hooker.  Check out this fabulous ensemble by Donna Karan.  Now yes, I know - she's Donna Karan - and she's pricey.  But as is the way in the fashion world, other design houses always come along and do their own versions for a less expensive price.

I know, it's a bit froufy, depending on where you're working (slightly modifying  the gauzy layer over the skirt makes it imminently more versatile) but that being said, it's the line of the suit that's the show stopper: gorgeous neckline, cinched in waist, soft, feminine fabrics in subdued, smoky shades - very feminine, very chic, and totally appropriate.

And this style would work well on a variety of body types; in other words, you don't have to be a size 0 to look great in this outfit.  Always a good thing!

And bottom line: who's going to be taken more seriously?  A woman wearing an elegant, sophisticated suit?  Or the woman wearing the too-short denim miniskirt and the lycra top?

Dressing appropriately will ALWAYS work to your advantage.
