The House of Kenzo

The fashion designer Kenzo Takada has lived in Paris since the 1970s; yet his Japanese background is all apparent in his fashions, and his home.  With a distinctive East-meets-West vibe, the house is a marvel of calm, yet striking, interiors.  In describing what he wanted for the home, Takada said, "I didn't want anything too overwhelming or ostentatious.  I wanted an oasis for both my creative time and leisure time."

His living room is a perfect example of the Western and Eastern influences.  An antique Japanese lacquered table sits between 19th century French daybeds.  A Japanese ebony bedroom chair is placed to the side, while antique French crystal candleholders grace the table.

Objet d'art are placed thoughout the room, but with strong editing - it's in no way overdone, not overwhelmed with "stuff."  The result is dramatic, but at the same time peaceful.   And those stairs in the background - they're not just a whimsical architectural element, but lead the way to the dining room.

To see more of his beautiful house, and the garden, check out the April 2008 issue of Veranda magazine.
