A Classic French Style Guide

For today's Style Source Fave pick, I chose Genevieve Antoine Dariaux's A Guide to Elegance: For Every Woman Who Wants to Be Well and Properly Dressed on All Occasions.

Originally written in 1964, with an update in 2003, A Guide to Elegance has been called the "classic style bible" for timeless chic and poise.  While some might find it a bit "old fashioned," or perhaps geared to women older than 35; the book is a pearl of classic, French education on shopping, dressing your body type, the must haves for every woman's closet, and detailed information on even the smallest accessories.

Plus, I must admit I get a kick out of some of her style admonitions.  For example, no alligator (neither shoes or handbags) is to be worn after 5 PM, as alligator is strictly for travel and sport.  Now, I must admit I've flaunted this rule several times myself; as I have a small, red alligator bag that on occasion, I've carried after her deadline.  Horrors!  Oh well, my justification is that it's not a huge carry-all, and it was customized for me!  But I'm sure Madame Dariaux would still take me to task.

And about Madame, she spent most of her life in Paris; and at one time was the Director at Nina Ricci.  She now lives in the south of France.

If you've never read a "style book" in your life; I think this one is a good place to start.  In some ways, it might seem to be a look at the past.  But Madame Dariaux is charming and funny; and bottom line - she gives lots of great advice that is appropriate no matter what decade we're in.

It was all about how to update your look, your wardrobe, for very little money.Considering the current economic conditions, spending less on a wardrobe is probably not just a good thing - but a necessity. But therein lies my ...
