Beauty With a Classic English Attitude
Today for our Home Decor Thoughts segment, I've chosen yet another room from the archives. You've probably noticed that quite often, the rooms I choose to highlight are not newly designed and decorated, but several years old. Yes, like fashion, home decor styles do change and require freshening, if not outright redoing. But again, as with fashion, classic styles retain their good looks and are usually pleasing for many years.
The space we're looking at today is one I first saw eight years ago. I liked it then, I like it now. In fact, I never cease to be surprised at how few of the old photographs I throw out over the years. Again, it just shows that certain looks are, indeed, timeless.
This photo is from a renovated London town house. It shows the passage that links two long rooms, spaces that at one time were the living rooms of two separate town houses.
Now, there's a lot going on in this space. The architectural details are abundant: columns, heavy crown mouldings, carved fireplace and pilasters. And obviously, there is a lot or art - ornately carved furniture - dressy window treatments - the beautiful Tabriz carpet.
In inexperienced hands, this space could have looked like a fussy mess. But instead, the scene is calm - even serene. I can easily imagine whiling away the hours in one of the chairs, chatting with a friend, reading a book, or just watching the light change throughout the day. Ah yes, once again we have well placed windows with sunlight streaming in. What a difference the light makes!

I like the color of the house. White and brown. And it is very classic and refreshing.
