A Room of Her Own
Here we are on another Wednesday, and time for the Home Decor Thoughts segment. I first saw today's room in a magazine, oh about, three years ago. I loved it then; I love it now.
It is (or maybe was - could look completely different by now!) the living room in designer Carolyne Roehm's New York apartment.
And as you would expect of Ms. Roehm, it is filled with gorgeous, pricey antiques and objet d'art.
But anyone with loads of money can have rooms filled with expensive furnishings. What drew me to this room was the juxtaposition of the very formal elements - gilt, fringed upholstery, bronzes - with the more casual.
The architectural elements are striking: grand proportions, coffered ceiling, enormous windows, stunning millwork - pilasters, columns, grandly scaled moldings. Yet, there are no phoofy window coverings, no oriental carpets. The wall's are a vivid, eye catching color, but are not covered with a plethora of art. The bookshelves are filled, but with everything arranged by size and color, you get not even a hint of fussiness.
And the result: a very grand, richly appointed room that feels fresh and dynamic - not the least bit stuffy. See for yourself:

Lovely - lovely!

Talk about a richly appointed room. Beautiful. Is that Louis XIV style? or Early Romantic period furniture?
