Love Books? How About a Lilliputian Library to Fit Inside Any Home?
Here we are on another Wednesday, and time for our Home Decor Thoughts.
I love to read, and that fact's reflected in my house as there are books all over the place. I have some built-in bookcases in my living room, but they are filled; so the books find their way onto tables, nightstands, radiator covers... you get the picture. Because what I don't have is a library - and honest to goodness space dedicated to all the books.
Well, today we have a video showing a home library - but this is a teeny, tiny Hobbit-sized kind of room that's in Country Living magazine's House of the Year.
I was struck by the room because of its size. Normally, when I think home library, I think of a large space with massive amounts of bookshelves, maybe even those uber-cool library ladders that run on tracks around the shelves. I picture a library in an English manor house - or the one in Oprah's California house. (Did you catch it? It was profiled awhile back in the O at Home magazine. Truly lovely.)
But this library is quite different. It has its own "room," but it's almost as though it were tucked into an alcove of the house. Which got me to thinking: anyone can have a library in their home - just pick your spot.
I've actually seen one library that was created from one side of a dining room. The very creative homeowners decided that they just weren't getting enough use out of their formal dining room, but didn't want to do away with it entirely. So, they replaced their large dining table with a much smaller one and placed the table on one side of the room, and then had beautiful built-in cases built on the opposite side. Another small (but high) table was placed in front of the shelves, along with a couple of comfortable wing chairs - perfect for reading.
And the beauty of their design? When they gave a dinner party, they simply put the leaves in the "regular" dining table, and also used the smaller table by the shelves for dining - just pulled up a few more chairs along with the wing chairs. Voila! They could still seat 10-12 guests for dinner.
But here's the video from Country Living - it might just give you some ideas for a library of your own.

When I was small, our small library is my home. I love houses with libraries.

I agree with you - libraries are fantastic. You were lucky to grow up with a home library!
