Chinatown: More Than a Movie - A Great Guide to Style
"I don't get tough with anyone, Mr. Gittes. My lawyer does."
Oh yes, one of my all-time favorite lines: Los Angeles, 1937, and Chinatown.
Jack Nicholson was never more handsome; and Faye Dunaway - the picture of the cool, elegant and mysterious lady.
Today it's time for our Style Source Faves segment, and it might seem a bit odd to pick an old movie as a style source. But I'm choosing it for two reasons: 1) Chinatown is simply one of the best movies ever made, and 2) I just love the style - the look.
The cars, the clothes, the hats, Faye's (excuse me, Evelyn Mulray's) house and gardens - all fabulous depictions of high style. Jake's look is a breezy, almost careless elegance. While Evelyn's wardrobe of perfectly tailored suits, veiled hats and gloves, suits not only her character's luxurious lifestyle, but also her restrained, secretive personal style.
Need to look powerful and elegant? Hm, what would Mrs. Mulray wear? Want to appear carefree and devil may care, yet at the same time dressed to the nines? Think Jake Gittes.
A little video reminder of just how gorgeous the movie was:
